Belal Etiabari may have only started training in 2021, but in just five years he has become a black belt under Lachlan Giles and one of the most exciting heavyweight prospects in grappling.

Originally from Afghanistan, Belal moved to New Zealand at the age of one and later studied engineering before beginning his Jiu Jitsu journey on April 10, 2021, training behind a mosque. He later gave up his engineering career to fully pursue Jiu Jitsu, eventually making his way to Absolute MMA, where he quickly developed into a dangerous and highly skilled competitor.

Belal first gained wider attention as part of Team Australasia at CJI 2, after winning the heavyweight spot at the Giles Trials held at Absolute MMA. At the time, he had only been training for four years.

He has since continued to make history, winning the Men’s 99+kg division at the 2026 ADCC Asia & Oceania Trials and qualifying for ADCC Worlds 2026 as one of the first New Zealand athletes to win ADCC Trials.

Known for his powerful submission game, dangerous guard, and rare flexibility for a heavyweight, Belal brings a unique and exciting style to the mats.

• 🏆 Winner 2025 May CJI Trials
• 🏆 Winner 2025 August CJI
• 🥋 2026 March Black belt under Lachlan Giles
• 🏆 Winner 2026 ADCC Trials

Belal will be teaching his footlock system, entries from K Guard, reverse De La Riva and finishing mechanics.
