James Woonton

Adults & Kids Coach

Black Belt

James Woonton developed a fascination for combat sports, particularly MMA and Jiu Jitsu, during his formative years. As a teenager, he dabbled in a few trial classes, but due to financial constraints, he was unable to fully commit. Determined to pursue his passion, James began working at the age of 17 to finance his training.

Finally, in 2015, when he was 18, James found the opportunity to embark on his Jiu Jitsu journey. Guided by Pedro Fernandes at Tukaha Jiu Jitsu in New Zealand, he made a dedicated commitment to his training. This marked a significant turning point as he immersed himself in the world of Jiu Jitsu and began honing his skills under Fernandes’ guidance. His dedication and passion for the sport propelled him to achieve his blue belt in 2017.

In 2018, James relocated to Australia, where he continued his training at Arte Suave. His commitment and rapid skill development led to his promotion to purple belt in late 2019, under the mentorship of Uroš Čulić.

James’s technical prowess and relentless pursuit of excellence have earned him numerous accolades in the competitive Jiu Jitsu scene. Notably, he has emerged victorious in the Grappling Industries Absolute division three times, where competitors of all belt levels and weight classes vie for the title.

His competition achievements also include being the Blue Belt Submission Only National Champion in 2017 (NZ), a four-time Queensland State Champion (three times at purple belt and once at blue belt in 2018), and a Pan Pacific silver medallist in both Gi and NoGi divisions.

James’s dedication to his art and relentlessness in his training and competition has consistently moved him quickly up the ranks and in 2020 he was promoted to Brown Belt under the guidance of Uroš Čulić and Nic Barker.

James has also tasted victory in classic super fights and secured the second place in the Trilogy Invitational in 2021. In addition, he clinched the silver medal in the Pan Pacific No Gi division in 2022 and became the New South Wales State Champion in No Gi in 2023. His outstanding performance also earned him the silver medal in the Victorian State Absolute division in 2023.

On July 20, 2024 Uroš Čulić and Nic Barker proudly awarded James his well earned Black Belt!!

James also offers private lessons, which he prefers to conduct in small groups of two to four individuals. These personalized sessions allow him to address specific concerns and challenges that his students may be facing in their Jiu-Jitsu practice. With a specialization in No Gi, James brings focused expertise to help his students overcome obstacles and improve their skills in this particular discipline.

While Jiu Jitsu remains James’s primary focus, he also enjoys exploring other interests. One of his passions is fine dining, where he appreciates the artistry and flavours of exquisite cuisine. In addition, James has recently taken up DJing, showcasing his versatility and ability to immerse himself in diverse creative endeavours.

Great coaches, great people and great rolls! Best club I’ve been to in Aus. If you’re looking for an open mat on the weekend they are the best in Bris for sure and run Sat and Sunday.

Our kids started their BJJ journey 2 years ago here at ArteSuave. Emanuela and the instructors are knowledgeable and passionate at what they do. They have created such a comfortable and safe place for the kids to learn and build their confidence on the mat. Highly recommend ArteSuave.

I started my BJJ journey back in 2008 and took a very long break and had resigned to the fact that my BJJ days were over.At AS, I was made to feel very welcome and the technical level of the instructors and students gave me confidence that I was in a safe environment where I could go at my own pace , enjoy it and still improve without the fear of injury. The in house physio is also amazing and it’s enabled me to bullet proof my legs and get my confidence back into rolling as now in my 50s as I had started to loose muscle mass and was worried about knee strain.. I am now back on track , enjoying making long lasting friends and overjoyed to be part of this amazing gym and community.

I first started at Arte Suave approximately 7 months ago and I never looked back.I chose their unlimited class per week option because I like the flexibility to attend as many classes as I can make each week. The coaches are fantastic and help you to unlock improvements each week, and the culture the owner Emanuela has built is second to none. All of her students are generous with their advice and support and look after you when you are rolling. If you are interested in the technical details there is a bunch of black belt coaches and if you want to compare gyms, just look at the results from the recent states comp or check out all the vids on their instagram. Can't recommend more strongly.

I was lucky enough to walk into Arte Suave when I moved up from Sydney as a Purple Belt. I realised very quickly that the coaching is at the highest level, the cleanest gym I’ve attended and the coach’s care about your improvement using technical expertise I seldomly experienced previously. The training partners are very respectful and will push you to the levels that you want to achieve. The vibe in the gym is always positive and friendly (which you don’t get at other gyms if you’re not a white belt starting out).I’ve also have my two daughters training their now and it’s exciting for me to watch their progression knowing that someday not too far from now I’ll be getting tapped out by them.
